Green Line received approval from the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) for a 2-year project on the “Promotion of Organic Agriculture in Lebanon”. The purpose is to promote organic farming in Lebanon with an emphasis on the preparation for the legal framework and the establishment of a certification system. This project strengthens a potential niche in the agriculture sector suffering from a marketing crisis and supports rural livelihoods sustainably.
The Organic Farming Committee gathered data and compiled guidelines for organic production to be used as National Standards. These Guidelines for the Production, Processing, Labeling and Marketing of Organically Produced Foods were based on the Codex Alimentarius Certification Agency’s guidelines, the European Community’s legal framework, the Tunisian Ministry of Agriculture’s regulations and the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Mouvements (IFOAM) standards. The Guidelines for the production, processing, labeling and marketing of organically produced foods compiled by Green Line was submitted to Lebanese Standards Institution (LIBNOR). LIBNOR is a public institution having the authority of preparing national standards. Green Line was following-up the standards for the production of organic products with LIBNOR and the Ministry of Agriculture. A National Committee, including representatives of all parties, held weekly meetings at LIBNOR and finalized the National Standards for Organic Farming.
The standards, passing through a trial period of three months have been divided into 4 sections:
1 – Plants and Plant Products, Livestock and Livestock Products, Beekeeping, and Food processing and Handling based on the EEC Regulation 2092/91;
2 – Aquaculture based on IFOAM basic standards;
3 – Forest Management based on IFOAM basic standards;
4 – Accreditation Criteria for Programmes Certifying Organic Agriculture and Processing based on IFOAM.
Within the scope of the “Promotion of Organic Farming in Lebanon” project, Green Line has organized two trainings during the last six months:
1- Training of Inspectors on the on the Principles of Organic Vegetable and Fruit Production, Inspection Techniques and Documentation of Results
Green Line Association has commissioned Ms. Wiebke Deeken from GfRS Resource Protection Ltd. to conduct a training course for 12 participants on the principles of organic vegetable and fruit production, inspection techniques and documentation of results according to the EU regulation on organic farming No. 2092/91 and its amendments.
The training was held at Green Line offices from July 8-16, 2003 and included theoretical and practical applications of the EU regulations on Organic Farming.
The training was preceded by a one-day meeting for the major stakeholders in organic farming to discuss the status of organic farming in Lebanon focusing on certification and inspection processes and current marketing systems.
2- Training on the Requirements for the Development of a Certification Body according to the EU regulation on organic farming No. 2092/91
Green Line Association has commissioned GfRS Resource Protection Ltd. to conduct a training on the requirements for the development of a certification body according to the EU regulation on organic farming No. 2092/91.
GfRS Resource Protection Ltd. a certification body recognized according to Regulation (EEC) No. 2092/91 in Germany and Austria since 1991, is accredited by the German DAP, and supports the establishment of local certification agencies for the production of organic goods by providing among others training on inspection and certification techniques.
The 4 selected participants were trained at GfRS Resource Protection Ltd. Offices in Gottingen , Germany from December 3-10, 2003 .

Eco-tourism started in 1997, with the annual trips to Arsal, the last agro-pastoral village in North East Lebanon. The trips were to strengthen the relationship with the local community and the Association for Rural Development in Arsal (ARDA), a key environmental and developmental NGO and a partner in the Reforestation Network, to introduce Green Liners and friends to Arsal, with its unique natural and cultural heritage, and provide ARDA with an income generating activity. For the past couple of years, the country witnessed a spread in “eco-tourism activities and providers” raising the need to organize this sector, coordinate between the providers and perhaps introduce some sort of certification to differentiate between the provided services. In 2000, Green Line’s executive committee decided to develop an eco-tourism project. For this, programs were initiated with municipalities (Taraya, Mtein, Deir Mimas), youth groups (Bourj Al Moulouk) and NGO’s (ARDA –Association Rural Development for Arsal, Byblos Ecologia). The program was a combination of agro-tourism, (Bee keeping, olive oil production, cherry and apricot processing), and eco- tourism (Horsh Ehden, Barouk cedars, Kammou’a, Kannoubine and Nahr Ibrahim Valleys.
The aim of this project is to highlight and publicize the concept of eco-tourism as a method of natural resources conservation and a source of income for the local communities. This should be combined with the coordination between eco-tourism providers, municipalities, governmental bodies, and NGOs to establish at a network for sustainable tourism. ACHIEVEMENTS: The committee was active between 2002 and 2004 in the following: • The assessment and the development of an eco-touristic (ET) site in Mtein • Build a team of expert in eco-tourism at Green Line Produce posters and brochures: Recommendation for Responsible Eco-Tourism (English and French), Date with Nature (Booklet for children) • Secure financing sources as an income and support
The Committee organized a Training of Trainers (ToT) workshop for teachers, administrative staffs and parents from 30 new schools on February 20-22, 2004 . The attendees (60 persons) were trained, by committee members, on the School Nutrition concept and were encouraged to initiate such a program in their schools. In addition, educational materials including a booklet (Little Green Eating Healthy) and a poster (food pyramid) were distributed to the attendance.
